When It's Time To Go, You'll Know It

There may come a time in your life, when you will be working at a job, and you will come to a realization that it may be time to look elsewhere. You may not have another job lined up. You may think, if I just tough it out a little longer, things will get better.

And they don't.

This happened to me not that long ago. I was working at a job, that I was being paid fairly well. I had earned the respect of my younger co-workers, cultivated a fair amount of regulars who were happy to see me and continued to support the business. It was not a chore to go into work, although some days were much longer and stressful than they should have been.

However, I could see the writing on the wall. Despite being an employee who managed the place, kept it clean, managed labor costs, and tried to keep morale up, I was never going to be given the authority to really run the place. No ability to schedule to insure proper coverage during peak times. No ability to hire or fire employees that are not doing what is expected. No ability to order the products so we do not run out. Being micro-managed by an owner who cannot even take a vacation, without double checking on the decision I made to ensure the best customer service.

My job was taking a toll on me, physically and mentally. I never believed the mental toll was a big deal, but post-COVID, I have come to realize, that is a real thing. I have also realized that people are willing to work, but not for a below average wage. They can always find something else. You need to keep your best employees, and find ways to make sure they are happy, and also hold them accountable, or they will run over you.

I knew that it was time to look elsewhere. But I wanted to be as professional as I could. Unlike many now adays, I was taught to give proper notice. 2 weeks is standard in the business world, and I gave an extra one. And on my last day, I made sure our store was prepared. I left them in the best place I could. I was 100% comfortable and at peace with my decision. If not, a little scared.

If any of you are willing to take a risk, because you are not happy at a job, do not be afraid. Some of you, may not have the option to leave or look elsewhere. I hear that. You may just know when it is time. There is something to be said about being at a place where you are happier, and maybe making a little less, but can still pay your bills. Be willing to speak up about your concerns. Do what is best for you. Life is too short to be unhappy. Find balance. You may find that life may have something better for you.
