Finally a holiday that we can all get behind. I can't think of a single person who does not like pizza. I may know a few who can't eat it because of dietary restrictions but thankfully there are more options available to help with that. Thank goodness.
Pizza is one of those food items that has so may options and ways to be enjoyed. During this pandemic, I have consumed an awful lot of pizza. Probably more than I should have. But it is so simple and convenient, and if you are smart about it, not too expensive. As a former pizza delivery driver, and manager, I also know that it is an easy way to bring families together, reward kids for a job well done, and the food cost is very low. Who doesn't love a pizza party?
There are so many different styles too. Brooklyn, Deep Dish, Thin Crust, Hand Tossed, Stuffed Crust, Detroit Style...the list goes on and on. But more often than not, it is just plain delicious. Most of the time.
So what makes a great pizza? Well even if pizza isn't great, it is still pretty good, lets be honest. I have found that the better the sauce, the better the pizza. We all have our favorite toppings, and fresh is best. The companies with the best reputation for pizza, usually have a sauce that brings out the flavor in the toppings. I think when it comes to dough, I just don't see too many differences...expect perhaps on thickness. I prefer a slightly thicker crust than one cracker thin.
I will say this. Find a local pizza place in your area, and they seem to have better pizza than some of the major chains. As long as the ingredients are fresh, and the product is consistent, you will be in good shape. Shop local. You may pay a bit more, but as someone who has delivered pizza for many years, and worked in many a pizza place, it is worth a bit more. Some of the major chains have good pizza and they can market them well. But if a local place has a good sauce...it is worth the few extra dollars. Trust me. And for the record...pineapple does not belong as a topping! :)
