Music Can Evoke 13 Emotions

In tough times, I am glad I work in an industry where music is a huge part of it. After the actions of yesterday, this country will need time to heal. We can often look to music for help in that. Music can say what simple words struggle to convey. We often turn to a favorite song when we are feeling sad, or angry, or need a pick me up.

Research has shown that the subjective experience of music across cultures can be represented through at least 13 key emotions. Those emotions: Amusement, Joy, Eroticism, Beauty, Relaxation, Sadness, Dreaminess, Triumph, Anxiety, Scariness, Annoyance, Defiance, and Energizing.

I know many of us miss live music. Going to concerts. Being able to bond with strangers over the love of your favorite artist. I do too. It will come back. Thankfully, so many artists have still given us new music during this pandemic. For those of us stuck indoors, maybe after the actions of yesterday, it is time to dig out your favorite CD, your I-Pod, you favorite album, or stream your favorite station and take some time to listen to whatever music can put you into a better mood.

I work in country radio, and a lot of the music can really tell a story. One artist that recently put out new music is Chris Stapleton. The album is entitled Starting Over. The title cut from that album is worth listening to, as we try and reset for 2021. We need to start over. I encourage you to listen to the song below. I hope it helps. Stay safe!
